Issues and pull requests are piling up, core devs seem to be absent or at least focused on other projects (worryingly, competing projects at times).
Looking at the release history, it seems there's one release per year. Somehow, the last 2 releases missed a 5-liner PR I wrote last year (among other simplistic PRs).
I get it everyone is busy, no one wants to be pushed around because no one is paid for it - but contributors are also not paid, in fact we are under a lot of pressure to explain continued use of a product that is poorly supported in the face of fancier alternatives that the cool kids are using nowadays.
If there aren't enough people to handle this, it would make sense to find more before everyone has effectively left... If you don't see a future in the project, deprecate/archive it so everyone can simply jump ship.

I have to say, I've been hesitating for a long time to post a message similar to this one, and I share your concerns about the state of the project.
I really love using behat and it saddens me to see it slowly dying.
I'm willing to contribute and help out, but it's very demotivating to see pull requests stagnate due to the lack of feedback from the maintainers. The current situation makes it challenging to stay engaged and committed to the project.

The only alternative for Story BDD (using Gherkin) in PHP I'm aware of is Codeception which I wouldn't say is a fancier alternative 😅 I wonder which alternatives you are referring to 🤔
