Hi, are you planning to support version 3 of Sanity or is this plugin going to die?
Unfortunately we depended on it and are wondering if we should wait for version 3 support or think of something else.

Regards,
Robert

@roblom I'm wondering about the same thing.

Honestly I do not get why Sanity does not have an official plugin for the media library. It's really and essential thing regardless of what CMS you're using.

Hey 👋 To be honest I'm not quite sure. When we built this plugin two years ago, the existing media plugin (sanity-plugin-media) wasn't very good. Had lots of bugs, no tags, repo was stale. There was a gap in the plugin ecosystem and this plugin filled that gap.

The other media plugin has improved a lot since then and Sanity has adopted it as the official media plugin. It's hosted on the Sanity Github account and Sanity employees are contributing to it. I think maybe the time has come to phase this plugin out now that v3 is here. However this plugin still has about 1/5 of the amount of weekly NPM installs, so that's significant usage. I'm not sure what the best course of action is. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Any opinions? Is there are reason why this plugin is favourable over the other one? Does this one have features the other is missing? Is it hard to switch from this one to the other plugin?

Hey, the main reason we used it was the option of being able to add our own custom fields.
We need copyright for all images used in frontend "articles" etc.
If the now official Media plugin could add such an option that would be great.
If it also added support for customizing the labels on the fields (and more), that would be even better :)
Right now we're rolling our own version of the Media plugin, to get the above features, not ideal in the long run.

@roblom It looks to me that it is also possible to add custom fields in the official plugin. The wording is a bit cryptic but that is what I get from it.

Bare in mind I haven't tried it out yet but will let you know once I do.

wow, yes, I agree, cryptic ;)
"If you want to set values you can query in all instances of that asset (alternate text being a good example), consider setting those in the plugin" the big question is how...

@roblom Did you try out https://github.com/sanity-io/sanity-plugin-media#faq with custom fields?
