The placement of the sorting arrows in the UI violates the proximity principle of UI design.
The screenshot below clearly indicates that the users are sorted by birth date (closest column header), where in fact they are sorted by gender. If the browser window covers the full screen width it's even worse, because the distance increases.
perceived grouping:
Please place the sorting indicator directly next to the caption so that the perceived grouping equals the real grouping.
Good example: Sorting indicators in the redmine bug tracker. Clearly sorted ascending alphabetically by subject:

I'm with you that the arrangement of the icons is unfortunate. However, we use a tool here (Datatables) that specifies this arrangement. Unfortunately, changing the position of the icon here is a bit awkward and I don't like it at the moment, as it's more of a hack.
