User story

As a government practitioner, I need to understand how to create an effective survey so I can respect respondents' time and insight, collect useful data, and improve customer experience at my agency.

Additional information about the request

  • There are a lot of ineffective surveys out there, in government and otherwise.
  • Surveys are a focus of recent CX memos and initiatives. Without proper guidance, agency partners and practitioners may produce surveys to meet a CX expectation or requirement but fail to provide useful results.
  • While this method card should focus on creating an effective survey more broadly, we should also consider HISPS who need to follow specific survey requirements.
  • We currently do not have a "survey" method card. By creating a method card, we have the opportunity to help agency partners and practitioners create more effective surveys that respect respondents’ time and collect useful data.

Open question

  • Who typically reviews and approves methods cards?

@MelissaBraxton as the Methods code owner - is this a new method we should introduce?

Hmmm. This is an interesting idea. I think survey methodology is a pretty complex topic that would be hard to cover in a meaningful way w/ the method cards short form. I would think longer form content on surveys could be a helpful addition to a guide.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a method card for HISP CX surveys though, because it's very specific and could be made concise and link to relevant policies etc. and would be a helpful thing to be able to point HISP partners to (and blog about!). However, OMB would have to be an engaged stakeholder in approving that content.
