Hosting hugo site on github pages from existing repo

I have a team documents repo on github with many contributors. I want to publish these documents on github pages from this repo using hugo as the static site generator. I would like to know if this can be done with all the hugo files residing in my existing repo instead of creating a new hugo site repo. I would rather not create another repo and duplicate the markdown document files. Thanks for any assistance.

That should be no problem: You can create a custom publishing workflow to build and deploy exactly how and what you want as a Pages site. There even is an example workflow for Hugo. I haven't used it myself, but it might give you an idea of what to do.

Sorry to comment on a dead post, but I'm trying essentially the same thing now and I'm not seeing my docs appear at all. The action is completing and reporting success but when I click on the link to that repo's pages site I just get 404's

I'm not sure what information to provide or even what to search as I am brand stinkin' new to GH Pages and to Hugo

I spoke too soon, and just figured it out.
