Unable to use codespaces template to create new non-template GitHub project

I have successfully used codespaces to create projects with API Logic Server, as doc'd here. The result is that while I have a running project, I am unclear how to save it as a new repo.

So, I created a copy of ApiLogicServer/ApiLogicProject, but as a template.

I then followed these instructions for creating a codespace from a template. The project was successfully created and ran, but I was unable to get the expected result when I tried publishing from VSCode (see the screen shots below):

1. I did not see the Publish Branch button
2. So, I guessed to use fork (?)
3. The created project was still a template - I expected it to be a 'normal' project.
4. And, note I was unable to name the created repo on the fork

Hope these instructions are clear, happy to hop on a call to illustrate.
