This is feedback to respectfully attempt ;-) to "bump up" at least one of the points that have been raised on the wider and more general https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/3864 to GitHub's product management planning priorities list:
The automatic re-numbering of numbered list items which that post alludes to is the primary annoyance that I have with the web editor for Markdown files.
It sersiously bugs me several times every day single day. It's probably because I maintain a lot of personal ToDo.md kind of files in various repos, and often quick edit them on the Web UI.
It would really really cool if you could have an "Editor setting" about "Markdown List Item Numbering" for Automagical -VS- Don't touch! kind of preference choice, probably on https://github.com/settings/accessibility. Pretty please? ;-)
Reproduction Steps
Click Edit on any *.md file which has something like:
and now put the cursor after one and press Enter. As https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/3864 describes, that will try to be helpful to renumber the list, but that typically doesn't really work reliably enough. I would much rather (at least have an option so that) it doesn't touch it!
