Why is snapshot collection keeping old versions?

The Snapshot feature allows a snapshot to be taken for an aggregate to reload it quickly without the need to replay all events from its history.

My question is why in that collection, a new document is created every time a snapshot is added for an aggregate. Are old snapshots be useful?

Is it recommended to add a job to clean old snapshots?
