*** Before commenting on this issue, please make sure that you have installed AdNauseam v3.19.0 ***

My settings:

  • OS/version: Windows 10
  • Browser/version: Firefox 118.0.1 (64-bit)
  • AdNauseam version: 3.18.0
  • Other extensions you have installed: NoScript, Dark Reader, SimpleLogin
  • AdNauseam settings: Hide, Click, Block, no exceptions

After a few days, the warning changed to:

I switched to uBlock Origin and for a few days I had no problems. But then, after a PC restart:
youTubeBan3
So, this is not AdNauseam-Specific.

Just got this as well. Also on Firefox 117.9, on Linux, with AdNauseam version 3.17.9.1 (but got it on 3.18.0 on a different computer).

As a bit of a bypass you can use the ublock element picker in adnauseum to block both the popup message itself and the black background around it, this will make videos start paused when clicking on them but will allow you to unpause them immediately instead of waiting for youtube to let you close out of the pop up since the pop up will never appear.

They have also blocked the scrolling feature. I am not sure how to bypass this as well.

I confirm this was happening, but then I updated the filters and it stopped, should be because of filters not up-to-date. Before updating, can you please share what was the time of the last update of uBlock filters on the dashboard filter-list tab? It shows if you hover the time icon like this:

Updated all filters and lists (after purging them) and this message still occurs for me

This is a consequence of YouTube's commitment to fight against ad blockers. The question is, will AdNauseam fight back?

It seems that this issue is also happening to some uBlock users uBlockOrigin/uAssets#19976, maybe we are suffering a bit more since our lists may not update as fast as uBlock (still investigating this). Sorry for any users suffering from bans because of this, the ad-blocking community is doing its best to keep up with youtube's new methods.

I'm currently waiting for a new official release from uBlock, so we can pull merge and release, I'm hoping it should happen this week.

I'm wondering if this has to do with Operating System, because on my Linux PC and my Linux Steam Deck I've not gotten the YouTube AD block detection.

I don't run anything other than Linux boxes, but I've also noticed them increasingly showing up on all said boxes.

The first other Linux I've seen, it does then seem to be that it is not yet my turn

Seems like YouTube is doing some A/B testing and more of us are a part of the "A" group now. I'm just gonna say it, I prefer this popup over the ads themselves. (Not banned from watching videos, they just have a 5 second timer for me)

@SkylerFur

SkylerFur commented Oct 17, 2023

I don't think it's A/B testing, more like A/B/C testing. As something I've been noticing recently is YouTube has been shrinking my buffer size and how fast it refills I get quite a bit. It's not my speeds because Google helpfully pops up it's "Experiencing interruptions? Find out why" thing still, and it always shows me that my provider and my speeds are good.

sotonin commented Oct 17, 2023

A/B testing just means they roll something out to one group and something different to another. Yes. more people have recently been getting caught up in their ad blocker effort. So far just popups for me, but then they actually stop you from watching any videos so it's a bit more serious than just popups. Unsure how long before that happens... it's been a few days of annoying popups for me

Some people are speculating it's a regional thing. Who knows, maybe there's even more experiments going on. I haven't been blocked or throttled yet.

Can't play videos now. Reached 3-videos limit. Found a thread on reddit on uBlock, it said that youtube changes the algorithm to detect ad blocker 2 times a day and instructions on how to update filters and find plugins that youtube reacts to. In my case, updating filters with restarting firefox browser helped (so far it did).

Thank you @AlexeyMatskevich, yes sadly we are dependant on uBlock regarding this. Since it seems not to be AdNauseam specific, it's useful to check the discussions on their issue tracker as well: uBlockOrigin/uAssets#19976

Hello, on chrome i found out that by using "AdBlocker Ultimate" youtube does not bother anymore, i do not think this adblocker is OSS but i take it as a temporary solution while we figure out how to implement this behaviour on adnauseaum/ublock , i also would recommend surfing the web or youtube, there is a lot of info we are currently missing out about this problem.

@mneunomne

Thank you @Elkellympia for the comment. Using other adblockers along side adnauseam is not recommended, but it is possible, and most of the ad collection works despite other adblockers, so it is fine to use it yes.

@eyeonus you are correct, the version showing on the website is the last published version on github, but not on the store. I'll take a look at that.

It usually only takes a few days, sometimes less, for it to be updated on the store.

I noticed the AdNauseam webiste's link to download the add-on says "Install AdNauseam v3.19.0", but Firefox is still showing 3.18.0 on the add-on site, and I'm too noob to know how to install it manually. I tried following a guide that involved renaming the zip to xpi and setting "xpinstall.signatures.required" to false, but I got a "can't install because not verified" error, so I'm lost.

Does nayone have an estimate for approximately how long will it take for the update to show in Firefox?

You want to download a release zip for Firefox, go to about:debugging, go to 'This Firefox', then 'Load temporary extension'. This will let you choose the zip you just downloaded and get it firing.

Note that this will not persist on browser restart.

Report from ungoogled chromium here, tried with a couple videos, this could change after some more hours of testing.
Behaviour in chronological order: open video in new tab, unfocused, the video takes like 1 or 2 seconds to charge (probably youtube doing it artificially) without having to be on that tab, the video is able to autoplay as soon as i switch to that tab, exceptional behaviour if i say so.

Thank you and the team so much for what you guys are doing, i really appreciate it.

I have AdNauseam 3.19.0 running on Firefox 120 on Linux. When I open a yt video, the block window flashes on and is removed. The video goes black and refuses to play. However if I disable "Enhancer for Youtube" extension, the video plays.

Started getting ads after updating to 3.19.0 for the first time on youtube.
Ad plays with audio but with a black screen.
Prior to updating to the latest version I was running AdNauseam in tandem with AdBlock on firefox and had no issues.
Would be nice to go back to a legacy version.

I have been ad-free for a few weeks. However, I am seeing the ad block banner again just now.
Filter purge and update do not seem to work. 3.19.0 yes.
More people having this now?

EDIT:
Yes, someone had updated the filters while making this comment 👍🏻.
now updating and purge is working yet again 🥳

AdNauseam is working fine and I today only installed it and while all the other extensions were defeated by this move of YouTube, Adnauseam is still blocking all ads and I am also not seeing the popup when I am logged into YouTube, glad I found it.
You can have it on your website, would act great in getting new users who are tired of this move by YouTube.

I do have all that enabled. I go to youtube and I get hit with the Ad Blocker ToS black screen. It was working fine and then it stopped today so I removed it and tried out the Beta version and still no dice.

I use LibreWolf and Edge and in both AdNauseam is still working,
Are you using any other ad blocker or chrome's own blocking or something like that, If you are then disable them as they will conflict with AdNauseam, then Adnauseam might work.

I had a question, when we use AdNauseam since it clicks the ads alongside blocking that means the YouTube creators will also benefit from it right? Compared to using traditional ad blockers.
So that means it solves the whole purpose creators will get ad revenue and we will also not have to see ads.
Am I right here or not?

Kinda/sorta. The ad companies have attempted to block off counting users using AdNauseam, but it works. I don't think Google likes it either way though, and this is a bit off-topic on the issue.

YouTube has started to detect AdNauseam for me and fully block me from watching videos. I have the most recent version (3.21.0) and the only other extension I have active that interacts with youtube is to return the dislike feature. Don't have any custom filters, just most of the ones from the regular filter list page with the exception of all under Languages and two from Multipurpose (Dan Pollock's and Fanboy+Easylist-Merged)
