BepInEx while running under Proton

I have tried to follow various instructions to install while running a game through Steam proton. I cannot seem to get any version to work with the game. Is there a way to start debugging the lack of loading Bepinex in this environment? I don't have any information to share in which to open a bug report due to the failure nature. I am running steam under Ubuntu 20.04.3. Game launches fine, but Bepinex never seems to load. It never even auto generates the directories.

Didn't see this before, but instructions for games running under proton/wine exist at https://docs.bepinex.dev/v5.4.16/articles/advanced/steam_interop.html#5-configure-bepinex-to-suit-your-needs, would probably be nice to have something in the installation docs point Linux users there.

I followed the instructions to run BepInEx with Proton but somehow BepInEx still does not work: I modded KSP2 using CKAN, so all dependencies should be resolved, and I see no mods in game.

Alright this was a permission issue, due to CKAN being installed via Docker.
