Summary

After talking with @SomeMoosery about domain names, I threw out the idea of using the coronatracker.me domain for both the website and the app and wanted to create a formal issue to consider it with the team.

Website: https://coronatracker.me
Web App: https://app.coronatracker.me

Motivation

The .me TLD has a nice ring to it when talking about the app, and staying on the same domain conveys a higher level of trust.

Describe alternatives you've considered

  • we could leave it as coronatrackerbeta.com, but I assume the software will be finished at some point 😛
  • we could continue with coronatrackapp.com, but I am concerned people will type "coronatrackerapp.com" by mistake (not that I did that, or anything)
  • we could select an entirely new domain name and re-brand the entire company, but that sounds tiresome

Additional context

If we want to get really fancy, we could serve static content from static.coronatracker.me, too.

This change would likely require moving the domain name registration to Amazon, and since it was registered on 3/22/2020 this won't be an option until 7/15/2020.

If we can get a solution similar to what we are trying to do with coronatrackapp.com working (re-assigning name servers to Amazon), then it could theoretically work for this, too.
