this document.xml file is extracted from a docx file, I just call load_file() and save_file(), the spaces in <w:t xml:space="preserve"> </w:t> get lost.

By default whitespace-only nodes are discarded; you would need to use parse_ws_pcdata flag during parsing to preserve them.
