Stacking grid items with opacity < 1

If I stack grid items in a grid layout the opacity of each item doesn't seem to be isolated. If I set the opacity of the first item to 50%, the opacity of the second item is also affected. I would not have expected this to be this case? (rendering in MS Edge 38.14393.1066.0)
