What is the upload speed limit for single large file? #4

Hi,

Thank you for all the hard work you put into TUS!

I uploaded 1GB file, but I was not able to reach upload speed greater then 12MB/s. The client and the server was both on the 10 Gbps line.

The implementations don't have any speed limit on their own implemented. I assume the performance is limited by the IO, either by the speed reading from the client's disk, the speed that data can be transferred over the network, or the speed writing to the server's disk. I would recommend you to investigate each potential bottleneck on its own and maybe that helps you to find out if they are applying to your. In my local tests, GBs are transferred in seconds, so I don't think its a flaw in the logic right now.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Unfortunately, the disk speed nor the network is the issue. Any other idea?

dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=10000 | cat > /dev/null

This is primarily a test of CPU and memory throughput rather than disk performance, as it involves generating data in memory and then discarding it without involving the disk subsystem.

To benchmark disk performance, you would typically write the data to a disk device or a file on a filesystem, rather than piping it to /dev/null. For example, replacing /dev/null with a path to a file on the disk you want to test would provide a measure of disk write performance. However, be cautious with such tests, as they can write a large amount of data and potentially impact other operations or data on the disk.

Upload performance is always a bit tricky to debug. How fast are the uploads if the server and client are running on the same machine? If that's fast, then we can rule out any issue with the software itself.
