My suggestion is to add some information (or warning) on add_dimension web page that not all data types are appropriate for "range partitioning".

Actually for range partitioning only: integer, timestamp and date are allowed and as explained in issue 6805 also subtypes as smallint and similar.

I have explained full step-by-step example in issue 6805, see link above.
