SubEthaEdit is great, but it looks like it is missing some useful features for programmers (and not only programmers):

enclosing both sides of a selection with brackets or symbols (e.g., _ ..._ or **...** when using markdown);
column editing;
keyboard shortcut to quickly comment a block of code;
R and (who knows?) FORTRAN syntax highlighting.
