Thanks for a great product!

I'd love to see more options for different types of surfaces. Right now all sidewalk-like segments are plain grey and road like segments plain black, for asphalt. But the look and feel of a street changes a lot by type of surface, and also how you use it changes. For example a road with cobblestone makes you want to drive slower than with asphalt.

This can have a big impact on the street, and would be a huge upgrade of Streetmix, IMO.

I know that Streetmix only shows a cross section of a street, but surface types could be indicated by using a bit of the depth of the segment, just like the Street car segment shows rails "bellow surface".

Surfaces I think you should consider for sidewalk-like and road-like segments:

  • asphalt (this is standard for roads, but not available for sidewalks)
  • concrete (could look the same as the standard grey used now?)
  • paving stones
  • cobblestone
  • compacted
  • gravel
  • pebblestone
  • ground
  • grass paver

In addition it would be nice if tree and buffer (when choosing tree) segments could have:

  • grass
  • gravel
  • flowers
  • bushes

Just my thought on how to make Streetmix even better, and a lot more visually appealing IMO.

Thank you!

+1 to this feature request. I am drafting a proposal to my city for an open-streets-style event and I want to be able to show people walking in the (asphalt) roadway. (It's just not as compelling when the ground is the wrong color.)

@tannert There's a workaround for your specific use case!

If you build a drive lane, you can select "pedestrian" from the list of options (should be on the far right of the lane types).

@louh This is really helpful! I was about to submit a request for a shared-use path segment that could show cyclists and pedestrians sharing a lane but this workaround is sufficient for my needs at this point.

One small observation though: you can still trigger and alert for excess width that is really only relevant for vehicle travel - and there are cases where a 12+’ pedestrian route is appropriate.
