Hello, I have just recently started playing StepMania on PC, and I am using Bluetooth ear buds that have around -300ms of latency.

Unfortunately the latency is so large that the autosync doesn't calibrate properly and will adjust the latency to +107ms.

How I ended up fixing this was:

  • Go to Display Options -> UI -> Show Song Options -> Show
  • Select a song to play, hold down Start to access song options
  • Exit to the second menu, Change Fail to Off, Assist to Clap
  • Start the song
  • Wait for the till you hear the first clap then double press your Escape/Back button, use Shift+F11/F12 to move the first arrow just beyond where you are supposed to press them.
  • Then either enable Autosync F6 or go back to the Calibrate Audio Sync to dial in a good value.

This was really difficult to figure out and manually fix as a new player. While using the Calibrate Audio Sync, you cannot use the keyboard shortcuts Shift+F11/F12 to give a better starting off point. But even if you did have that, it's not clear how to get a good starting value without claps. Also Shift+F11/F12 aren't listed in the wiki https://strategywiki.org/wiki/StepMania/Controls. When you press F11/F12 the on screen displays Song offset and Machine offset, I understand now Machine offset is Global Offset. Enabling Show Song Options was difficult to find. Double pressing Escape to pause the song I somehow lucked into finding that, also not listed in the wiki.

When I first started playing and the autosync set the offset to +107ms, like some songs would be ok and others would be off but in a really weird and confusing way. It took a few sessions to be like ok, something is wrong here.

So I am up and cooking now and having a great time, but it was a lot to learn and figure out and very frustrating as a new player.
