Species might get (or have been) both split as well as merged into new ones. The data model and the admin UI should be able to handle and facilitate these operations.

We are getting closer to solving this by interfacing with the IUCN API Synonyms. We might also consider importing Taxonomic Notes from them.

Hey @creeas & @hkindsvater,

Ann and I were looking into the splitting & merging of species features and have a few questions:

Splitting of Species

When a Species is Split, what is supposed to happen with all associated records (e.g., all the trends and trait measurements)?

Should they be

  1. Associated with all new Species?
  2. Associated with one of the new Species?
  3. or should the user go through some kind of interface selecting case by case to which of the new Species the record belongs?
