Debug log ID

D

What happened?

After I downloaded the 6.7.154 version and installed it in my zotero and clicked restart now, my zotero just went blank in the main window (that contains the list of all the papers) and I cannot click on anything. After a while, it just said zotero not responding...can anyone help me with it? I have stored so many stuffs in zotero. I am so afraid this is going to ruin my library

Hello there @zoe667,

Hope you're doing well! @retorquere is here to help you get the most out of your experience with Better BibTeX. To make sure he can assist you effectively, he kindly asks for your cooperation in providing a debug log – it's like giving him the key to understanding and solving the puzzle!

Getting your debug log is a breeze and will save us both time in getting your problem resolved or the new feature you'd like implemented. Trust me, it's way quicker than discussing why it's important. 😃

How to Share Your Debug Log:

  1. If the issue involves specific references, citekey generation, or exports, just right-click on the relevant item(s) and choose "Better BibTeX -> Submit Better BibTeX debug log" from the menu.

  2. For other issues, follow these simple steps:

    • Restart Zotero with debugging enabled (Help -> Debug Output Logging -> Restart with logging enabled).
    • Reproduce the problem.
    • Select "Send Better BibTeX debug report..." from the help menu.

Once you hit that submit button, you'll get a special red debug ID. Just share that with @retorquere in this issue thread. If the question is regarding an export, don't forget to include what you see exported and what you expected.

By sharing your debug log, you're giving @retorquere a clearer picture of your setup and the items causing the issue. It's like a superhero cape for him – he can swoop in and tackle the problem much faster.

We totally get that your time is valuable, and we appreciate your effort in helping @retorquere help you. You might be surprised at how much this simple step speeds up the whole process.

Thanks a bunch!

PS: If the Debug Log menu does not appear, or it does not send the debug log

A fallback option is available under "Help" > "Send debug log to file.io".

Your library is safe. I can look at it in an hour, please restart zotero and after start, choose "send to file.io" from the help menu, and post the ID you get. Then you can disable BBT until I figure out what's wrong.

Can't read those, and I don't support older versions of BBT. What operating system do you use?

Try to capture a log to a text file from the command line using https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output

I think you are emailing something -- attachments don't show up on github if you reply by email.

But screenshots don't help. Close zotero, open a terminal (cmd) window, type

C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ZoteroDebugText > zotero.txt

and attach zotero.txt here after zotero starts and hangs

These debug log IDS D<number> are no help -- they go to the Zotero team, I have no access.

partial log

there must be more than this. Try

C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\zotero.exe" -ZoteroDebugText > zotero.txt 2>&1

all output should go to a file called zotero.txt. Please attach it here, don't paste its content into the issue.

And no screenshots please. They don't help usually.

In the directory where you typed the command

Thanks a lot !
I uninstalled/reinstalled Zotero following your advice, and everything is now working :)

If noone is going to try build 5913 I'm going to close the issue. Discussion of the matter can then continue in the discussion boards. Issues are for stuff that requires action from me.

I am very sorry @retorquere, I just encountered the same freezing problem this morning when I restarted my computer and Zotero. I thought it was definitely fixed with Zotero updating, but unfortunately it is not.

As you mentioned, I tried the testbuild 5913 and 6.7.165 BetterBibTex versions with Zotero (6.0.36). Here is the debug log :
Debug_log_BetterBibtex_testbuild.txt

I think this problem is similar to this one on the Zotero forum https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/comment/455093#Comment_455093. I tried to delete the extensions.json file in Zotero Profile Directory, but it doesn't work.

It seems like BetterBibTex initialization uses a lot of memory :

My only way to use Zotero is in safe mode, or with the BetterBibTex plugin disabled.

Thanks a lot for your help !

Many thanks @retorquere for the new testbuild !

When Zotero starts, the debug log is endlessly working, here is an extract of the new debug log :
