i found it 404 now

You could try this:
scow = xr.open_dataset('https://chapman.ceoas.oregonstate.edu/thredds/dodsC/CIOSS/SCOW/Monthly/scow_monthly_maps.nc')
It worked for me. Sorry Ryan, maybe you were going to answer did not mean to short cut :) BTW thanks for this great tool!

Thanks for your tutorial, are really self explanatory. Would be great to updated the tutorial.
For any one may be useful. It's seems the data is available over here:

• https://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds232.2/dataaccess/
• https://coastwatch.pfeg.noaa.gov/infog/QS_taux_las.html
  But the Jupyter need to be updated.
