I'm still working on it... please don't order it yet! It's very much a
word in progress. I would be happy to accept any help to develop it. I
just started it recently and got the hardware working. I am preparing the
next version which fixes a lot of stuff.
The radio is optimized to actually send/receive low bandwidth protocols
directly with the arduino, not requiring a computer. It will support
CW/RTTY and a new mode I am designing called SCAMP directly on the radio
itself. The requirement to implement the digital signal processing
directly on the Arduino results in some limitations of the protocols that
can be implemented. But I'm always open to having my expectations
surpassed.

I am interested in the project because I am part of the emergency network
in France.
We train to make transmissions in MFSK64 or 128 with FLDIGI.

Hi! I'm super interested in the project! What is the status of it? Is there any help needed? Thanks! :) |
You might consider joining the slack channel at the Open Research Institute
( http://www.openresearch.institute ). It is currently being offered as a
kit by them for a donation.

I am working on getting the project into the hands of those who have
ordered the kit. I hope they will help provide feedback on the transceiver
and help improve it. My main interest right now is to finalize the feature
set and make the radio software and hardware robust. So if you can get
your hands on a radio, whether you order it or build it yourself, using the
radio and SCAMP and providing feedback would be valuable.

Question from a passerby: What would be the approximate range of this device when working in this text transmission SCAMP mode? |
Well, not to be evasive, but it depends a lot on band conditions. If we
relate it to similar modes like FT8, then probably on the order of hundreds
to thousands of km. The distance can depend very strongly on the time of
the day and the state of the ionosphere between two stations. For a mode
like FT8, often the goal is to make contacts, but not contacts in specific
places at specific times, and SCAMP like FT8 should be able to accomplish
that. If your goal is to reliably establish a connection between two
particular stations at any time, this requires selecting a suitable band
(especially given the time of day and season) and above all having a
matched antenna as high as you can get it.

The use case I had in mind is a cheap two way pager for areas with poor/no cell coverage with a range of maybe up to a hundred km. |
You should look up NVIS (Near Vertical Incident Skywave) for the kind of
propagation suitable to your application.

As someone who only knows how to turn on a walkie talkie I think I
understood most of this with help from google.
Thank you!

With my Hermes Lite 2 and an EFHW antenna I realized 15,000KM range QSO using FT8 mode on frequencies well fitted to the conditions of the day, currently high HF like 15 or 10M bands. No doubt a RFBitBanger can do marvels with SCAMP mode. |
