Note: the folks at interline.io have something that would work with this. On the go map also has an efficient approach - I'm not sure if it's open source but could be worth a chat.

Just having a poke through this repo -- thanks again for open sourcing it! https://github.com/dabreegster/route_snapper/ is an option if a user is constrained to a fixed, relatively small area. It'd be possible to do something with custom routable tiles or abusing MVTs for routing, but no plans for that yet.
