For openwatcom-1.9, I found you can set Optionally create an
Run the installer with a DstDir set (important: the destination parent directory should exist - in the example below /opt) and be writable - so unless you are installing in a home directory you may need sudo. TERM=vt100 ./open-watcom-c-linux-1.9 -f=override.inf -dDstDir=/opt/openwatcom-1.9 -s Files are now available: ls /opt/openwatcom-1.9/ -l

It is known bug in OW 1.9 installer.
workaround exists
