hash symbols in vertex names cause YAML problems

if a vertex is named something like #01-01 then it causes problems with the finish_name field of task management, likely because downstream something isn't being properly quoted. Quick fix for now is to enforce that vertex names are restricted to "tame" strings similar to variable identifiers.
