NOTE: New meeting day - Mondays (not Wednesdays anymore)
Weekly Meeting 135 is happening on MONDAY, 27 November, 2023 from 9:00 AM PDT (16:00 UTC) - 10:00 AM PDT (17:00 UTC)
You can add it to your calendar here.
(we're updating this shortly. time zones and phone verification steps are getting in the way)
We'll be meeting again in the omi-weekly-meeting channel of the AngellXR/OMI Discord.
We regularly use the # omi-meeting-chat channel for text chat.
Who we are and why we're here:
The Open Metaverse Interoperability Group (OMI) is focused on bridging virtual worlds by designing and promoting protocols for identity, social graphs, inventory, and more. Our members include businesses and individuals working towards this common goal.
If you’re an observer or here for the first time, this is a meeting where people who work on the OMI group initiatives discuss updates and contribution opportunities for current projects and goals. This is your chance to jump in and help!
We're glad you're here. What do you like doing?
We welcome you to introduce yourself in the 🔈 omi-weekly-meeting chat as we dive into the agenda items. There will be an open floor in the last 15 minutes of the meeting (agenda permitting) where we can discuss any items you feel are relevant to the current or near future OMI goals.
Agenda
a) Twitter Spaces as a complimentary meetup space? How?
b) Is https://widerweb.org/@omi in its own universe? Can't find many things, e.g. to follow https://mastodon.social/@qz_ or https://mastodon.social/@indiebio.
Related, need to decide on a time, day of the week for casual meetups that work for people in the East/ Australasia, something relevant to that timezone, an Asia-sync perhaps. Suggest 09:00 UTC
Do people want a daily check-in? Many of us work alone, and it may be nice to have a agile stand-up sortof thing daily, "this is what I am working on today". Could be decided by small groups of friends, could be something that is open for the community at large.
Being clear on this not only strengthens our brand, it makes it easier to collaborate with others, without anyone feeling like it's a competition or stepping on others' turf.
E.g.
MSF - corporate, standards
M3 - blockchain type personalities. Focus on VR
OMF - Linux, commercial open source?
OMA3 - web3, DAO, NFTs. Principles: Interoperability, standardisation, ownership.
OMI - grass-roots, indie, focus on the spaces between, the intersections - agree?
Once we agree on our niche, how does that influence our publicity strategy, and membership drive?
Is working group structure relevant?
Had conversation about the bureaucracy heavy format of having working groups. Apparently need to submit proposal, then vote on it. It is deterring to newcomers or small teams, and it is not in the spirit of indie, or grassroots. Discussion: why is this the current way, what benefits does this way have, how else can we do this? How can we start new groups, how are ideas presented? (#omi-experiments is one good way, but then from there?)
the media group's job is to find good things and then share them!
What are the results of OMI?
What benefits do projects have to say, hey, we're developed as part of OMI, rather than just going on our own?
OMI map
Way back apparently there was a map of things for OMI to work on. Not a map of the metaverse, but a sort of a vision board. Can anyone share that link please?
Awesomeness page
Was suggestion to showcase projects on the OMI page, but cannot guarantee projects align with all the OMI values, and cannot be explicitly supportive of projects that could derail Rather, make an "awesome" list that is a great landing point for newcomers. Inspiration: https://github.com/sorrycc/awesome-javascript; https://github.com/V-Sekai/awesome-v-sekai -
People can add their projects themselves, and the community (champions?) have some moderation power over that.
Publicity team job description
"the media group's job is to find good things and then share them!"
Hot take: NO! The people with access to the socials can't go find things, we are also busy. It is all of us's prerogative to share cool things on #omi-media, for the people with access to then share to the socials.
Discord channel clean-up
Channels that could be archived have a red x next to them. If you disagree with this please speak up. Next step is to move them to less visible, and make the default view for newcomers much much simpler. Apparently Godot Discord knows how to do this. Research required.
Split out AngellXR from OMI - prepare proposal. MrMetaverse is fine with this, with the requirements that the OMI channel moves, not AngellXR, and that this is announced in a blogpost acknowledging the role AngellXR played. Angell will resume being a place of rapid* experimentation, hackathons, and a focus on creating startups.
Metaverse events calendar
Is there such a thing as a metaverse events calendar, anywhere? Could this be something we can create?
Fun finds in the past week or so
TODO next: learn about W3C chairs, combine groups (after Discord streamlined and awesomeness page created)
