Now that ggplot2 is apparently easier to extend, I'd love to see an implementation of these graphs for ggplot2.

@jemus42 Unfortunately, I have never once used ggplot2! I'm kind of oldschool when it comes to plotting and like to do everything from scratch using base-R. That said, I do remember that Tom Hardwicke tweeted (https://goo.gl/B7e9yV) that he had implemented a version of the pirateplot in ggplot2 for a recent paper in PNAS (http://www.pnas.org/content/113/19/5206.abstract). You might try contacting him and asking if he could distribute the extension (again, I have no idea how extensions to ggplot2 work!)
