We have the ability to encode Mensurstrich style barlines in MEI with
@bar.method="mensur"
.The killer feature of this notation is to have cross-measure durations (without having to split them into separated tied notes):
However, it is unclear how to encode this correctly in MEI. The top staff could look something like this:
Are there any attributes available to say that the measure keeps the given meter (like
@metcon="true"
) and say that notes extend into the following measure?Is it sufficient for the "offset" of the note in the second measure to carry a
tstamp?
<note dur="2" pname="f" oct="4" tstamp="3" />
A similar problem was slightly touched during the MEC 2022 with the paper Mysterium: A Corpus of Alexander Scriabin's Music for Solo Piano by Bryan Jacob Bell: Spanning tuplets:
In the first of Scriabin's Twenty-Four Préludes we constantly face quintuplet eighths:
From this example it is clear that the middle note of the first group should be on the first beat of the measure, although it should be printed before the barline (as the placement of the rests suggest).
A simpler example would be this case, where the half of the middle triplet quarter note belongs to the second measure:
(Note that the note in the second measure starts on tstamp="0.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333".)
