If this is changed to a single semibreve:
It should become:
(Currently the hairpin disappears, presumably deleted with its starting note.)

Which does already sort of work: it looks like this at first:
but when trying to adjust the start hairpin of the handle it snaps to the right position.
This same behaviour should apply to other spanners too, and indeed to non-spanner items, as long as they can are not generally required to be directly attached to a notehead.
