I have no issues opening a v19 database on a freshly downloaded 1.8.0 portable version. There must be something else going on here. Can you post the details from the "About" dialog?

I can't seem to find how I can set up a password

To encrypt your database go to File > Save Database As..., enter a name, and change the Save as type at the bottom to Encrypted MMEX Database

Nothing looks out of the ordinary on the About info, it even says Database version: 19

Your v19 database opens OK in 1.7.0 but not in 1.8.0? If that is the case, please open it in 1.7.0 and click Tools > Database > Database Check and Debug... to run an integrity check and let us know the result.

In the properties of the .mmb file, you can set MMEX as the default under "Open with".
