It might be helpful to have users/sessions. Thinking that each user can have it's own origin (and orientation) in the shared map, relieving the client of computing relative positions.

Other uses:

  1. permissions on tiles
  2. permissions on metadata

Maybe this should be in a companion service that adds on some business logic.
