Sporadic problems with suspend

Suspend is misbehaving and I need help diagnosing the problem (I don’t know what information is relevant in this case).

When closing the laptop lid, configured to trigger suspend, only leads to the screen locking and the display turning off but not suspending (laptop LEDs not blinking indicates this). The display turns on when opening the lid showing the unlock prompt screen when interacting.

When choosing suspend from the session menu the screen locks, display turns off for a moment and wakes again to the unlock prompt screen.

For reasons I cannot explain there are times where suspend does work properly up to a point (which I cannot identify) which forces me to shutdown to save power consumption.

Luckily I do not experience any freezes or similar problems. I’m running gnome Manjaro 18.03 Illyria , i saw solution that say try to install 4.18 kernel when you have 4.14 but i have 4.9 kernel . thanks
