If you create a new node type, and then add the localgov_directory_channels field to it so it can appear in directories, then the localgov_directory_search pseudofield from DirectoryExtraFieldDisplay appears in all view modes of that node type. This includes search results, which make it looks confusing.

The problem might be that (IIRC) extra fields appear by default on new node types. Unlike actual fields, there's no way to say that they are hidden by default.
