if xelatex complains about not enough memory, do the following.
1) make a file (such as ktex.cnf or texmf.cnf) with the extension "cnf" and place it in the folder "/etc/texmf/texmf.d/"
>>sudo gedit /etc/texmf/texmf.d/ktex.cnf
add the neccessary lines (such as the following) to this text file and save it.
main_memory=7000000 %
pool_size=10000000 %
2) run the following, which copies the above two lines from the file "/etc/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf" you can read this file before and after the command to see the changes
>>sudo update-texmf
3) the following command which runs over numerous files compleates the job.
>>sudo fmtutil-sys --all
if you compile a book again, the end of the log file will show the new memory values.
