What went wrong?

I migrated to Big Sur and now Export Layers is very slow. When I do an export, I get a spinner for 30 to 90 seconds before the export starts. The actual file export proceeds at normal speed (a few seconds). I didn't notice performance problems before installing Big Sur.

GIMP has some known performance problems on Big Sur (link) but it's unclear if this is related.

It probably doesn't make sense to try to fix Export Layers until the underlying Big Sur issues are fixed in GIMP, so this is sort of a placeholder bug. But this could be some weird file system timeout in Big Sur.

(By the way, the Export Layers feature is very useful and I use it almost every day, so thank you for creating it.)

If you can, tell us the steps to reproduce the problem.

I have a 4623x4570 image, and I use "Export Layers (repeat)" to export to png.

Expected behavior: should start exporting files.
Observed behavior: spinner for a long, long time before export starts.

Configuration

Version of Export Layers: unknown

Version of GIMP: 2.10.14

Operating system: macOS Big Sur 11.1

Always happy to see someone enjoying using this plug-in :)

This was actually reported as an issue for GIMP itself and has been closed:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/5989

I am assuming that the latest GIMP 2.10 version fixes this. Hopefully this issue did not re-emerge with newer versions of macOS :)

Also, if you use multiple custom procedures applied before export, especially on large images, the export will natually be delayed since a considerable amount of time will be spent just on applying the procedures.
