I'm really trying hard to find a work-around the incompatibility of downcute and runtime: shiny.

Sorry to be extremely late to reply to your issue. I tried to add runtime: shiny to the preamble of the downcute sample document, but didn't see any difference. If the issue is still present for you, could you please send a reproducible example ?
