Disable marker creation in Reading mode

Is there a way to set the map to a "read only" mode or something similar? I keep accidentally creating new pins when I'm panning around the map and have to delete them. I tried locking the map via the lock icon, but it doesn't seem to stop the pin creation.

Ideally, this read only mode would be only in reading view, but editing view would still allow me to create new pins.
