Hello, I'm trying out napari-imagej for the first time using an M2 Macbook pro - I was reading through some documentation and issues - specifically #17 - and am discouraged to see that (at least in mid 2022) the imageJ/FIJI GUI was not available in napari. I'm wondering if there are any updates on this end in being able to use the imageJ GUI within napari? Thanks!

Hi @mpm896, thanks for your interest in napari-imagej! This issue comes from an ongoing problem with interactive mode (i.e. having both the Python REPL and ImageJ GUI active) on macOS with PyImageJ. You can learn more about what specifically is happening from this issue: imagej/pyimagej#23. We've been working to resolve this problem (its really annoying), but its still in progress. Which means for now napari-imagej can only use PyImageJ headlessly.

I am currently working on a workaround in PyImageJ that allows macOS users to load functions as callbacks and to run them before the ImageJ GUI locks the event loop. I haven't had a chance yet to try this with napari to see if we can get some form of ImageJ GUI + napari working together.
