Flextable: merge_h(), merge_v(), merge_h_range() to merge a square into 1-row or 1-row slices. Maybe merge_rows() and merge_cols() would be your function names.

Gt: pretty table titles with subtitles; footnotes with cell references; simple way to add "spanner" headers; simple way to add group headers; nice automatic scientific formatting (and similar).
