Describe the issue you are experiencing

I am not able to restore a backup made by HomeAssistant on a new installation.

Clicking “Alternatively you can restore from a previous backup” and selecting a previous tar backup always results in a pop-up stating “Unsupported file format - Please choose a Home Assistant backup file (.tar)”.

Trying to upload a backup under Settings / Systems / Backups leads to the same error.

What is the used version of the Supervisor?

2022.05.1

What type of installation are you running?

Home Assistant OS

Which operating system are you running on?

Home Assistant Operating System

What is the version of your installed operating system?

5.10.108

What version of Home Assistant Core is installed?

2022.5.4

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. Using HAOS on a Raspberry Pi 3B, I created a backup as follows :
Went to Settings / System / Backups
    Selected “create backup”
Waited about a half hour (!) for the backup to be created
  2. Once complete, I clicked the vertical … menu, and “download backup” to get the file onto my Windows PC
  3. On my PC, fired up the Virtualbox VM running HAOS (Linux)
  4. Logged into http://:8123 in my Firefox browser
  5. Clicked “Alternatively you can restore from a previous backup”
  6. Selected the tar backup file I downloaded in step 2
  7. I got a pop-up stating “Unsupported file format - Please choose a Home Assistant backup file (.tar)”.
  8. I then created a dummy account and went to Settings / System / Backups
  9. Using the vertical ... context menu, I clicked "Upload backup" and selected the tar file from step 2
  10. I got the same error as in step 7

Anything in the Supervisor logs that might be useful for us?

N/A

Additional information

I installed the SSH add-on and uploaded the tar backup to HAOS using WinSCP, and was then able to restore it successfully. This proves that the backup file itself wasn't the issue. It looks like there may be a problem with the backup file upload process.

The browsing I'm using is Firefox 100.0 on Windows x64, FYI.

In thread https://community.home-assistant.io/t/moving-haos-to-a-different-hardware-platform/421608/6, other users mentioned that there was a bug in the past related to backup file size. I'm not sure if this is the same problem I'm experiencing here.
The tar backup file is 715 MB in size.

Just checked and tested with Chrome 103. Restore does indeed work there. But it does not work under Firefox 102.

Firefox 104.0.2 (64-Bit) still does not work. Microsoft Edge Version 105.0.1343.42 worked for me.

Installed HAOS fresh and updated as far as it would let me before trying to restore the backup I'd taken a couple of hours earlier. I found that this is still broken when using Firefox 105.0.3 (64-bit). Chrome works fine.

Verified that this is still an issue today on HAOS 9.3 in Virtualbox, with Firefox 107.0 (Windows).

Confirm that this is still an issue, using a fresh install of HA OS 9.3 Raspberry Pi 4, Firefox 107.0.1 on Win10. Error message: "Unsupported file format"
Restore works ok with Crome.

Hm I just tried to reproduce using firefox 108 and a dev system on latest. Made the backup, downloaded it, deleted it, re-uploaded it and restored it all without issue. I'm on a Mac so perhaps that's it? I don't have a windows machine available, can anyone reproduce it on a non-windows machine?

I just tried to reproduce it on Firefox for Linux 108.0.2 and couldn't. It works fine. Looks like the issue is specific to Firefox for Windows.

Still an issue. Exactly the same. Running VirtualBox on Windows using Edge.
Tried all sorts of ways.

  • Directly restoring when onboarding
  • First onboard and install samba add-on to transfer backup
  • Onboard and use SSH add-on in combination with WinSCP

When trying to hit restore button of the backup, either nothing happens or connection is lost indefinitely. Restarting VM also doesnt work anymore.

I am having the same issue trying to restore from Home Assistant 2023.3.5 Supervisor 2023.03.1 Frontend 20230309.1 - latest to a new VirtualBoxVM on Windows 10 running HA OS 9.5 and HA Core 2023.35. I tried downloading from three browsers. Is there any other way to get to and copy the backup files?

Issue still present with Firefox Nightly 113.0a1 (2023-03-23) (64-bit). Worked with Edge.

Most likely related to the service worker issue also observable on backup download (see home-assistant/frontend#7258).
