Notebook interface is Jupyterlab Desktop v4.1.8.

Description of expected behavior and the observed behavior

I expected to be able to continue using Matplotlib in a notebook, regardless of which Holoviews backend is selected.

However, the Agg backend seems stuck and non-Holoviews Matplotlib plots do not appear in the notebook output.

I appear to be unable to reset the Matplotlib backend using %matplotlib or any other usual method.

Complete, minimal, self-contained example code that reproduces the issue

Cell 1:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import holoviews as hv
hv.extension("bokeh", "matplotlib")

Cell 2:

plt.plot([1,2,3])
plt.show()

You can reset the backend with mpl.use('module://matplotlib_inline.backend_inline')

Thanks, that seems to have worked. Do you know why the other methods didn't work? Or is that more of a Matplotlib question?
