I built grist-electron as documented in the README, and I want to start learning how to use it, but I've come up against some behaviour that surprised me and I have some perhaps beginner-level questions. When I hit "Start Tutorial" I'm prompted to sign in to Grist, but it's unclear why - the open-source Grist is presented as being self-hosted, so:

  • What is the sign-in needed for?
  • What would I be signing in to?
  • Why doesn't the tutorial just work locally with no sign-in?

I also went to "Help" -> "Grist User Help" to try and understand, but that brings up a new window with a "Page not found" error.

Many thanks in advance for any help / guidance / advice!

Hi @gmarkall, sorry about these confusing links. Ideally we'd simply hide them in grist-electron until they've been integrated properly. I expect for the tutorial you are being sent to https://templates.getgrist.com/woXtXUBmiN5T/Grist-Basics. Signing in there would be signing into our hosted service. It would be fairly easy to make the tutorial work in grist-electron but nobody has done that yet - it is a special document, rather than part of the code. Sorry about the rusty menu bar link, I expect if it were to go anywhere it would go to https://support.getgrist.com/ - that site again could be incorporated in grist-electron (it is built from https://github.com/gristlabs/grist-help) but nobody has done that yet.

Many thanks for the clarifications! Do you want me to close this issue, or leave it open as a placeholder for some of those tasks?

I will leave it as a placeholder, if it doesn't bother you - cheers.
