Hi
Has anyone tried the new (as of 1.8.0) Jumper Layer feature? How does this work with KiCAD?
I have wanted a jumper (aka straps) layer for KiCAD/FreeRouting for a long time and it seems like a wish come true to see it in 1.8.0.
If this is what I think it is, then I could assign a virtual copper layer for large, densely packed boards to "overflow" traces via jumpers which are having difficulty fitting in the normal front and back copper layers. Then during the optimization process as vias reduce and overall trace length shrinks, FR could incorporate those jumpers traces back into the front and back copper layers.
I'd have to set the weighting such that the front and back copper layers are preferred and only route traces on the jumper layer as a last resort.
Is this what happened? Has anyone tried it?
Thanks, Andrew Lynch
