Multiling O Keyboard (Next Word no longer installable on latest Android versions) used to have a swipe to type feature which is the same as you would expect from Google/Swype/Swift or other proprietary keyboards however it actually went a step further. You could swipe words (and phrases if you added two or more words onto the same line dictionary) without needing to think about vowels thus saving a lot of swiping action.
To give some examples:
"convince" -> "c-n-v-n-c-e" 8 swipes becomes 6 swipes (the last letter might be needed even if it's a vowel)
"convenience" -> "c-n-v-n-c-e" 11 swipes becomes 6 swipes however depending on the user's use they might need to tap the choice "convenience" rather than "convince" because one word might be more frequently used than the other in the "next word" or suggested word/phrases bar at the top
"would like" -> "w-l-d-l-k-e" 10 swipes becomes 6 and again possibly a tap on the user (custom added) phrase "would like" because it's possible that the 6 swipes leads to a different word or phrase.
It should probably be mentioned in another issue/feature request but to add/increase priority of a phrase/word to the dictionary the user would simple select the word/words then in the "next word"/suggestion bar at the top the word/phrase would show up and they can hold down on that word/phrase and a two option popup would ask to increase or decrease it's priority in the dictionary for future use.
Multiling O was never open source but I think the idea is simple enough that it might be reverse engineer-able. Since the swipe feature is currently being worked on I think implementing this sooner rather than later would be better. There may be a slightly longer delay using this method of swiping but I think the benefits are very worthwhile.
