Transportation and Urban Planning

I am a transportation engineer with the planning/engineering firm Arup. I like to employ creative data science and problem solving skills to address complex issues in the urban realm. This ranges from the development of models to simulate demand at curb frontages, transport facility capacity studies, street and airport terminal design, and geospatial analysis and visualization. I am interested in how travel models and data science can be used to improve transportation access, equity, sustainability, and resilience.

Prior to my work at Arup I received my Master in City Planning and a Master of Science in Transportation Engineering from UC Berkeley. My classes included Analysis of Transportation Data, Transportation and Land Use Planning, Behavioral Modeling, and Urban Informatics and Visualization. Outside of my classes I researched practices to re-center safety within transportation enforcement through a CSCRS Road Safety Fellowship. I also worked as a graduate student researcher at the Terner Center and as a curriculum developer/instructor for the Data for Housing data science training program.

My previous work includes planning and engineering projects in both the private and public sector. I was a data scientist at the US DOT Volpe Center where I developed a national freight rail model to support the national transportation noise map. I also interned on the transportation engineering/planning team at Fehr & Peers where I worked to validate transportation models and develop new tools for project development. Prior to those positions I was a GIS programmer/analyst for the Boston Metropolitan Planning Organization's Central Transportation Planning Staff. While at the MPO I developed web applications, conducted spatial analysis on a multi-modal travel demand model, and produced cartography to support regional transportation planning.

Planetary Geology

I graduated from Brown University with a Sc. B. in Geological Sciences. I completed and received honors for my senior thesis on the extent, diversity, and formation mechanisms of curvilinear ridges in the Nilosyrtis Highlands of Mars. Abstracts on my research were presented at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (2015 and 2016. Additionally, I co-authored a paper on the subject, which can be read here.

Wheel-Thrown Pottery

In my spare time I create wheel-thrown pottery. You can check out what I have made so far here. I enjoy making all sorts of functional and creative pieces. Recent explorations in clay include making lamps, designing decanters, glazing with tape-resist, altering claybodies to create texture, and exploring screenprinting to add underglaze decals of cityscapes onto my pieces.
