Gala Segfault #1672
Comments
Whoops, I was wrong, it appears to be connected moreso to login than to fresh boot. I just got another crash when switching to another user account (standard, non-administrative) and back again to my administrative account:
In this instance, the segfault appears to impact the behavior of the desktop, requiring me to log in twice. The first time, the screen goes blank and spits me back out into the greeter. The second attempt at a log in works. |
Hi there, can you try to give us more debugging information by following the tutorial here https://docs.elementary.io/contributor-guide/feedback/reporting-issues/inspecting-crashes |
I've read that link and have GDB and systemd-coredump installed. Since Gala is the window compositor vs a desktop program, and this issue seems to appear on first boot or during the login process, can you give me some practical instructions for retrieving debugging information from it? Otherwise the instructions provided seem specific to programs that only crash after login, after a debugging process can be set up. This crash happens before I can start tracking anything. |
Ok, here's what I have: I started the computer normally. I then ran
I was able to reproduce the segfault by switching between user accounts: ayoungethan (my administrator account) and caityholladay (my partner's standard account). It seems that some combination of loggin in/logging out/locking/switching between these two accounts causes the issue:
I then ran
it also automatically started another instance of gdb:
Lastly, I then ran the backtrace command inside gdb:

What Happened?
I don't know why this occurs, but it is a consistent message in dmesg output after every fresh start and login
Steps to Reproduce
Log into Elementary OS desktop from fresh boot
Run dmesg in terminal
Expected Behavior
I expect no segfaults of critical OS components on fresh boot
OS Version
7.x (Horus)
Software Version
Latest release (I have run all updates)
