It appears that only on the first connect to a network that requires some kind of confirmation via HTTP(S) before allowing a device to actually connect to the internet.

when working on a train, i sometimes like to not start any browsers, so i'm taken by surprise when git push hangs despite the WiFi logo showing a connection.

I believe the (or, a) problem stems from when the connection happens:

when i start the computer, it automatically connects to the network before I have logged into my account, the prompt does not show up when i'm logged in.

when i do reconnect i do get a prompt!

another interesting issue:

if you take too long doing this ⬆️ packagekitd will start using extraordinary* amounts of resources.
