I was only able to get the project working by replacing the wiring of the 3 push button switches with 3 pull-down resistor networks powered by the R-PI's 3.3V output. Hopefully this helps anyone else stuck on this part. Refer to this video for how to design the pull-down network: Simple Button Input with the Raspberry Pi
