The underlying JAI API is outdated and not longer maintained. Furthermore the provided libraries are not properly managed in our Nexus repo, and do miss complete licencing information and others short-commings.

The proposal is to migrate to Eclipse ImageN which provides and an replacement: https://eclipse.github.io/imagen/migration/

ImageN is the source code for JAI (not ImageIO).

You are correct we will need implement some ImageRead operation for ImageN. We will need to clean-room implement that as the source code was not provided.
