Cycling Power Zones Calculator

So you’ve bought a power meter, now what? If you’ve made the investment in a power meter and you want to train
correctly, you need to know what your Functional Threshold Power is. Knowing your FTP will allow you to set your power
training zones.

Here are the first steps to getting started with training with power.

Establish your FTP: The best and most common way of doing this is to perform a 20-minute test. Make sure the course is
an uninterrupted road without stop signs or traffic lights. Some people prefer to perform this test uphill. If you
choose to use a hill, make sure the gradient is consistent.

Take the average power during your 20-minute test minus .05. (Example a 300 average watt effort would translate to 285
FTP.)

Use the calculator below to find your training zones and watts per kilogram. Chris Froome, four-time Tour de France
champion has power levels equal to 6.25 watts per kilogram. Don’t worry, unless you’re racing Froome, you won’t have
anything close to that.
